Zamboanga Sibugay escaped Kapatagan to earn their first victory of the season on a nail-biting double OT

The winless Anak Mindanao Zambaonga Sibugay Warriors battles the BYB Kapatagan Buffalos who are still finding their footing in the league with both teams looking to get their first win of the season.

In the first quarter both teams have a rusty start until Kapatagan’s Garexx Puerto started to gain his rhythm. Puerto scored 7 points in the first period as he led his team to lead by seven heading to the next quarter, 23-16.

AMIN Warriors’ Shaq Imperial torched the Buffalos in the second quarter, as he scored 7 of his 9 points while his teammate Michole Sorela also added 7 points to chip away the deficit of Kapatagan. But, despite the run shown by the Warriors, Kapatagan still held on to the lead at the half on a precarious 1 point lead, 34-33.

Zamboanga Sibugay started the third period with a bunch of 3-point field goals coming from Imperial and Joseph Peñaredondo, who both drained two 3-pointers each. But, Kapatagan’s Puerto and Gayford Rodriguez refuse to let their lead go away as the Buffalos continued their strong surge in the quarter. The Buffalos still held the lead at the end of the third quarter, 57-53.

In the final quarter of the game, Jan Jamon sizzled hot as he drained 2 consecutive 3-pointers to get the lead. It was a high intensity game for both clubs as they exchanged baskets towards the end. The Buffalos and the Warriors ended the regulation tied at 66.

The game needed an extension as both teams eager to get their first win. Edrian Lao and Richard Kwong of Kapatagan kept pounding the ball inside. Kwong scored his 4 of his 6 points in the 1st OT. But, Imperial and the rest of AMIN Warriors refused to surrender. Joco Tayongtong had another chance to end the game but he missed the possible go-ahead basket, as the game still tied at 71 at the end of first overtime.

Jamon served as the closer for Zamboanga Sibugay as he drained crucial baskets down the stretch, but Kapatagan continued to hold tight. Until Sorela hit a 3 point shot under 2 minutes left in the 2nd OT, as Zamboanga Sibugay finally got their first victory of the season over Kapatagan, 89-83.

There are bunch of role players who contributed for AMIN Warriors to get their first victory in the likes of Shaq Imperial who was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points, with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Sorela also had a big game after he finished the game with 12 points and 5 rebounds, and Jamon who finished the game with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

It was an impressive game for the Buffalos but they fell short. There are bunch of players who really made an impact in the likes of Gayford Rodriguez, who tallied 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, and his teammate Puerto who served as a spark of the offense for them in the first half but, wasn’t enough to surpass the AMIN Warriors.
