VisMin clarifies: ARQ Lapu-Lapu coaches not fined for game-fixing

Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup has cleared the coaching staff of ARQ Builders Lapu-Lapu from game-fixing allegations.

In a statement by the league Friday evening, league technical director Rey Canete — also a member of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas — said that the Heroes staff did not receive fines for game-fixing allegations.

“As for the coaches of ARQ, namely Jerry Abuyabor and assistants Alex Cainglet, John Carlo Nuyles, Hamilton Tundag, and Roger Justin Potot, they were not suspended but fined due to unprofessional behavior during the game and not because of game-fixing allegations,” said Canete.

Abuyabor, Cainglet, Nuyles, Tundag, and Potot each received P20,000 fines. Meanwhile, head coach Francis Auquico served a three-game suspension plus a bill of P30,000.

The sanction was for failing to control their players during the farcical game that pitted the Heroes against the Siquijor Mystics last April 14.

“These coaches were expected to take accountability to the situation.”

On behalf of the league, Canete apologized to the Heroes and the respective families of the coaches.

“This serves as a learning experience for us and our quest to revive basketball and to provide a means of living to the players in the region. Rest assured that we will be closely monitoring players and coaches with the Games and Amusements Board,” expressed Canete.

“We apologize for the misunderstanding and trouble this has caused to the involved parties.”
