GlobalPort Valientes ZC Misamis Oriental proved to everyone that they are here to compete after a massive victory over Iligan City, 89-77, in their debut game on the second conference of Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup.
Ex-pro and former Gilas cadet Mac Baracael had 23 points on 75% shooting from the field and 9 rebounds and four other players scored at least 8 points to help the Valientes get their first win in the seven team tournament.
Baracael started the first period on a blazing start, scoring 7 points across his name while Iligan answered back thanks to Lester Tamayo’s scoring. But, the supporting cast of MisOr started to scorched hot when Dahrrel Caranguian drained two consecutive 3-point shots and Joel Lee Yu added 4 points in the quarter.
Misamis Oriental started the 2nd period with multiple points coming off Iligan turnovers. Turnovers were a big issue for Iligan in this game because they gave the Valientes a lot of fastbreak points. Baracael, together with former Adamson Falcon Joseph Nalos, who finished with 14 points, continued to torch the Archangels as the Valientes ended the half on a 50-31 lead.
In the third quarter, Iligan started to chip away the lead of MisOr into 11 point lead. But, Lee Yu helped stop the surge with timely baskets. Iligan team captain Rendell Dela Rea was inserted to the game in the midway of the 3rd period and started to drain three-point shots to cut the deficit, but MisOr stayed composed to end the third period with a 14 point lead heading to the final canto, 69-55.
At the start of the 4th quarter, Iligan tried to push back as they chipped the lead to a manageable 9 point deficit but Baracael and company refused to let their debut game end up with a L. Dela Rea and Tamayo tried again to start a new run in the latter part of the fourth period, but was not enough to get the win as Misamis Oriental got the victory, 89-77.
It was an impressive victory for the Valientes courtesy of the heroics of their former Tamaraw triumvirate Baracael, Lee Yu and Reil Cervantes. Lee Yu finished the game with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists while Cervantes finished the game with a near double-double of 9 points and 8 rebounds. Andoy Estrella also made a difference after registering an all around game of 6 points, 8 assists and 8 rebounds.
The Iligan Archangels looked tired after playing their third game in as many days but they fought hard and tried to snatch the game over Misamis Oriental but failed at the end. Another factor was the absence of their leading scorer Jack Hoyohoy who is nursing an ankle sprain injury.
Lester Tamayo finished the game with a monster double-double game 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Archangels in a losing effort.
