Double sports history in the offing for Cebu’s south town of Alcantara

CEBU, Philippines —  Not one, but two historic sporting events will take place in Alcantara town next month.

The fifth class municipality situated southeast of Cebu is all set and ready to host the inaugural season of the Pilipinas Vismin Super Cup, the country’s first professional basketball league based in southern provinces slated to kick off April 9 in bubble setup under strict health and safety protocols.

Aside from that, the town led by mayor Fritz Lastimoso will now also be the venue for the first ever pro boxing show of ARQ Promotions on April 18.

ARQ Gym chief trainer Eldo Apawan Cortes confirmed this development on social media after they secured a permit from Alcantara LGU for their upcoming event under close supervision by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB).

“It’s a done deal. April 18 is the final date of the first promotion of ARQ Boxing Stable to be held in Alcantara, Cebu,” Cortes wrote on his Facebook. “Thank you to our promoters Jason and Eva Mari Arquisola for their full support to our boxers.”

The husband-wife tandem of Jason and Eva Mari Arquisola established the ARQ Stable and Promotions early this year to give hope and provide livelihood to aspiring pugilists especially during these hard times. Interestingly, Arquisola is also the team owner of the ARQ Builders/Lapu-Lapu City Heroes that will be seeing action in the Super Cup.

ARQ has seven pioneering boxers on its fold in April Jay Abne, Berland Robles, Ian Abne, Zandro Librador, John Paul Gabunillas, Yerrodge Gura, and Niel Canete. They will all showcase their skills in ARQ’s maiden offering in the fight scene.

Jay Abne (5-0, 2KOs) will slug it out with Royder Lloyd Borbon in an eight-rounder flyweight duel;Robles will battle Kevin Smith Nemenzo of Lapu-Lapu City; Ian Abne will take on Kier Toregoza of RWS Stable;and Librador will go up against Patrick Gantuanco of Carmen, Cebu. The rest of the bouts feature Gabunillas vs Maurino Agum of Big Yellow Stable;Gura vs Steven Noblefranco of Talisay City; and Canete vs Marvin Campo of Cebu City.
