BASKETBALL LEGEND and current Cebu City South District Councilor Dondon “The Cebuano Hotshot” Hontiveros has been named Ambassador of the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup, the newest professional league to hit the country. Last Monday, league management conducted a successful online meeting wherein they also introduced the first seven teams that will see action this April 9 in separate bubbles to be hosted by the cities of Cebu and Zamboanga.
According to Chief Operations Officer Rocky Chan, the list is headlined by two familiar teams that have experience in similar community-based leagues in the Zamboanga Valientes of Rolando “Junnie” Navarro and the Pagadian Explorers of Mayor Samuel Co and businessman Rene “Dodong” Pamaran. They will be joined by a pair of Zamboanga del Norte municipalities in Sindangan of Sonny Diaz and President Manuel A. Roxas of Mayor Jan Hendrick Vallecer.
Three teams are from the Visayas composed of KCS-Mandaue of Ricky Verdida, MJAS-Talisay and Lapu-Lapu City. The other teams’ identities will be announced once they complete their documents and a cap of 12 teams has been set.
As Super Cup Ambassador, Hontiveros will introduce, promote and make the league closer to the fans. Prospective players hope to emulate his life story as a discovery from the University of Cebu varsity before going on to a long professional career with MBA, PBA and Gilas Pilipinas.
The Super Cup was established in order to give opportunities not just to athletes but to everyone who has a stake in the game. The league realizes their potential contribution to revive and sustain local economies while promoting tourism.
Aside from Chan, the management team is composed of Secretary General Coach Marvin Caro with Emilio “Jun” Migallen and Coach Van Halen Parmis serving as Coordinators for Visayas and Mindanao respectively. Veteran referee Reynaldo Canete will be in-charge of the Technical Committee with a Commissioner to be named very soon.
The league has already submitted the documents and requirements needed to become a full professional league and is now awaiting action from Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Abraham Mitra. A positive response is expected in the coming days.
